Protection at damage-prone bridge

Blakey Bridge, Sowerby
The bridge was severely damaged in a crash in May 2007

A bridge in North Yorkshire which has been regularly damaged by vehicles has been closed to allow engineers to install protective measures.

Blakey Bridge at Sowerby has been repaired at a cost of £30,000 over the past 15 years.

A new vehicle-activated sign was being installed on Sunday to deter lorries over 7.5 tonnes from using the bridge.

Bollards are also being fitted on both sides, narrowing the bridge to prevent heavy vehicles from crossing.

Work was being carried out by county council engineers on Sunday, when the bridge will be closed to all traffic for the day.
